Program Description and Benefits:
This program will cover recent developments as well as possible legislative and regulatory changes in the coming year. Ms. Harrison expects to cover recent cases dealing with step transaction doctrine, current status of audits and litigation involving valuing interests in closely-held businesses and AFR notes, section 2036, split dollar life insurance and formula clauses, new norms in state trust law, private foundation self-dealing rules, rectifying errors, marital planning for the migrating client, cross-border estate administration, options for giving to foreign charities, and business succession planning and state income taxation of trusts.
Speaker Biography:
Ellen K. Harrison, Esq. is a partner in the firm of McDermott Will & Emery where she advises clients on a broad range of tax issues, including estate planning and administration, tax controversies, and income, gift and estate tax planning for individuals, businesses and charitable organizations. She has significant experience drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney, prenuptial arrangements and buy-sell agreements, as well as a broad range of corporate documents and family partnership agreements. Her tax controversy and litigation experience includes Internal Revenue Service (IRS) audits, IRS appeals, refund claims and US Tax Court litigation. Ms. Harrison is the immediate past president of the International Academy of Trusts and Estates Lawyers, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and an Advisory Committee member of the University of Miami School of Law, Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning. She has served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law Center and is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
